A 9,000-sf retail store for the Hawthorne Valley Farm was designed as a high-performance building with a pleasing work environment. However, a year after moving in, occupants began reporting severe headaches and nausea. This case study describes the seemingly inconsequential irritations that had profoundly damaging implications for a productive workspace and the diagnostic methodologies and remedial actions taken to resolve the problems.

With Mike Trolle, of BPC Green Builiding Construction, C&H partners Bruce Coldham, AIA and Thomas Hartman, AIA will discuss how to grow a green practice in a program built around case studies of six single and multi family, small commercial and institutional projects, in new and
renovated existing buildings. They will cover the design, construction and verification of a zero annual net energy house; building greener, more resourceful affordable housing by shifting investment around, and why performance metrics matter.

Have you been considering a solar installation for your home (or business) but have questions about available technologies, costs, benefits and maintenance requirements? Chris, Aaron, and Tom, three highly knowledgeable solar energy users, will spend an evening explaining what their experiences have been with both photovoltaics and solar hot water systems. Each will give a brief presentation about his own personal home solar system with plenty of information about initial investment costs, payback timeframes, energy profiles and more. There will be time for discussion and audience questions.

AIA Delaware and Sustainable Delaware (the Delaware Chapter of NESEA) are among the co-sponsors of a day-long conference on Climate Change and Delaware. The focus of the day is on solutions, with opening remarks by Delaware Governor Minner. Representatives of the government, non-profit, and design world will offer perspectives and case studies on Global Climate Change. Bruce Coldham will speak from his experience in designing buildings with Climate Change in mind. Attendees eligible for 6 continuing education credits.
